Vidurshi joined Babcock in 2024 as a member of our Graduate Program. This program runs over two years and provides graduates with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to kick-start their careers in the defence industry.
Based in Adelaide, Vidurshi is now a Systems Engineer, working within a program that is designing and delivering the Air Weapons Handling System and lift and hoist systems on the Hunter class frigates program.
We sat down with Vidurshi to find out about her career path with Babcock.
What does your role as Systems Engineer entail?
My role consists of requirements management, engineering design change management, verification and validation, as well as supporting other engineering activities where I can.
Systems engineering is vital to program delivery as it ensures that we are delivering something that adheres to the customer’s requirements and that all sub-systems come together to form a full system that works and is safe.
In practical terms, my role as a Systems Engineer ensures that the system we are designing and producing functions exactly as expected. When we present the system during an engineering review to the customer, we are clear and concise about how the requirements are addressed and how any changes have been implemented. A recent project involved spearheading a rigorous change process to ensure that any design changes meet the stringent standards required for naval operations.
What are the most enjoyable and/or interesting aspects of your job?
The most enjoyable and interesting aspect of my job as a new Systems Engineer is developing my understanding of the complexity and depth of systems engineering. Upon joining as a graduate, I gained a quick interest in the role systems engineering plays in a program like Hunter. I quickly gained appreciation on how vital requirements management, change management and verification/validation plays in getting a project over the line.
Facilitating a system that is built well and goes through multiple levels of approvals makes me feel confident that our work is to a high standard and will produce a system that is safe to work.
Why did you choose to join Babcock?
During my time at university, I undertook several internships and undergraduate roles at small-to- medium enterprises. From this, I knew I wanted to be part of something bigger and that is when I narrowed by preference to defence primes.
Babcock stood out because of the Early Careers team; I was made to feel welcome. It seemed that Babcock not only wanted to engage the smartest, but also those who were eager to learn, felt passionately about their community and worked hard at the things that interested them. This, along with my overall experience with the Early Careers team, is ultimately why I chose the Babcock Graduate Program.
What is your proudest moment at Babcock?
My favourite moment since joining Babcock is being promoted from Graduate to Systems Engineer. It was incredibly rewarding to see my hard work, learning, and development recognised by my team and my line manager. The promotion felt like a milestone in my early engineering career, reflecting both my personal technical growth and the support I have received from my team.
What makes Babcock a good place to work?
I’ve been particularly lucky to be part of a fantastic work environment, and I have been encouraged to develop my skills as soon as I expressed interest in certain areas.
As a Graduate, I gained experience in programs across the business, including Babcock’s C-CBRNE Program where I supported the development of engineering and safety documentation for products being acquired or sustained. This allowed me to start my career in a very welcoming team, that supported me during the transition from university to a full-time role with meaningful work. This made me feel like I was contributing to the success of the team.
This trait is reflected in other parts of the business as well, which I observed when on rotation during the Graduate Program. It’s evident that Babcock’s leaders put the graduates and their interests first.
