Babcock continues in-service submarine sustainment for Collins Class, strengthening Australian Industry Capability

Babcock’s sustainment contract with ASC Pty Ltd (ASC) has been extended by two years, ensuring continued in-service support to Australia’s Collins Class Submarine fleet and Australian Industry Capability (AIC).

Babcock will continue to work alongside ASC to deliver a sustainment program from its engineering and maintenance facilities in Osborne, South Australia and Henderson, Western Australia until September 2022.

Babcock Australasia’s Managing Director – Defence, Andy Davis, said the contract extension incorporates Babcock’s commitment to continuous improvement and efficiencies to support the Collins Class Program.

“Partnering with ASC, Babcock combines its engineering, maintenance and systems integration capabilities to sustain the Collins Class submarines,” Mr Davis said.

“Babcock designs, manufactures and provides through life support for critical systems including the Weapons Launch System, Weapons Handling System, Submerged Signal Ejectors and Air Purification Units.

“We have a team of more than 40 local employees supporting the Collins Class Submarines and the contract extension will provide ongoing employment and retention of this critical sovereign capability.

“AIC is embedded in Babcock’s operating model. We are committed to building local capacity as well as capability in technology, engineering, design, sustainment, supply chain and training across Australia and New Zealand.

“Sovereign capability is fundamental to our business here in Australasia. By providing AIC, we establish longer term, sovereign defence capability for the decades of design, manufacturing and sustainment ahead.”

ASC Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Stuart Whiley, said ASC understands the importance of maintaining a secure, sovereign supply chain to deliver world-class submarine availability to the Royal Australian Navy.

“Our relationship with Babcock epitomises the positive outcomes of companies working closely together, not just for the security of our nation, but to grow and maintain lasting jobs in our local defence industry,” Mr Whiley said.
