Grow your career at Babcock: Kieran Miller

While outside of the office he’s an avid scuba diver, on the professional front Kieran Miller is an above-the-water Hydraulic Technician with a strong understanding of mechanical and engineering fundamentals.

Within his role at Babcock Australasia, Kieran provides repair, installation, inspection, and maintenance work on heavy equipment to ensure it meets the appropriate specifications.

“I regularly inspect equipment to ensure it is operating safely and at its optimum. I also refurbish components for the Collins Class submarinesWeapons Discharge System. My day can quickly change to working on other systems within the submarine to engineering solutions and problem solving while working closely with ship’s staff and the customer,” he details.

“I love the complexity and diversity that my role has – every day is different and the range of projects I have worked on have been rewarding. I also have the privilege of working alongside some great people which makes coming to work easy.”

From commencing a four-year Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship in 2012, to working as a fully qualified Hydraulic Technician today, Kieran says his professional development has grown by leaps and bounds.

“My role has helped me develop my confidence and leadership skills. I’ve been with the company for eight years and throughout that time I’ve worked with many people on different projects,” he says.

“I feel this experience has given me a well-rounded skill set and the ability to be a leader in the workshop and, as I gain experience, I look forward to passing on my knowledge.”

Babcock is committed to providing professional development opportunities to all staff, and Kieran is a testament to this initiative.

“Since completing my apprenticeship and obtaining multiple certificates, the business has provided me the opportunity to study and complete my Certificate IV in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) and has encouraged me to continue studying if I wish to.”

When it comes to chasing your dream job, Kieran recommends people “focus hard, learn as much as you can from the people around you, and never be scared to ask too many questions.” His advice to those thinking about pursuing a career at Babcock is simple.

“Do it,” he encourages.

“It is such a unique and exciting industry which is always leading the way and working with the latest technology.”
